8 Tips For Caravanning In Australian Winter
Australia isn’t known for its harsh winters, which makes caravanning and camping viable all year round. But don’t be lulled into thinking that you don’t need to winter-proof your rig - if you intend on staying cosy and warm you will need to prepare for it. Here are our hottest tips for beating the chill this winter:
1. Keep It Tight, Keep It Right
Before you hit the road it’s worth double-checking that your rig is watertight, draught-proof and that all seals are in good condition. Issues like these might not be noticeable in the summer months… but once a big rain comes, oh, you’ll know about it.

2. Steady As You Go
Those early morning starts can get awfully icey, so stay safe and keep a close eye on your wheel tread and air pressure. If you are heading for snow, it’s worth packing rock salt and towing chains for increasing traction and melting the ice.

3. Cozy Up
Heated blankets, soft floor coverings and heavy curtains provide comfort and insulation when the temperature drops.

4. Create An External Barrier
Caravan covers and draught skirts are a relatively inexpensive way to ensure that the wet and cold stays outside, where it belongs. But if heavy rain or wind is expected, it’s best to store your caravan in a sheltered location, away from any hazards - our beautiful gum trees are known for their tendency to drop branches during a storm.
5. Find The Light
If possible, park in a sunny spot and let nature warm your brow and your rig.
6. Create Heat
Need to really warm your bones? Portable heaters, hot showers, and campfires provide the kind of intense relief often needed after a big chill.
7. Chase the Sun
If you can’t handle winter… head north! The sunnier pastures and more tropical climate found in the top half of Australia may be more to your liking.

8. Stay Active
Bike riding and bushwalking are great ways to explore your surroundings, spend quality time with your companions, and stay fit and warm.
